Yamashita's Koinobori is one of the Koinobori manufacturers in
Kagawa prefecture in Japan. There are a few Koinobori manufactueres
in Japan, but most of the products are factory made, mass-production
things which are made of synthetic fabric and plastic parts. Only
Yamashita's Koinobori have been keeping hand-made Koinobori products,
which are made of Japanese paper (called "Washi") and bamboo
wares.
In 1998, the scarecity and importance of hand-made carp streamer was
admitted and assigned as the traditional artcrafts by the government
of Kagawa prefecture. At the same time, Mr. Shinichi Yamashita, the
craftsman of Yamashita's Koinobori, who has been keeping this unique
hand-made Koinobori for over 50 years was appointed as the Traditonal
Craftsman of Kagawa prefecture.
